The journal was founded in 1956. The online publication (scientific journal) VIR Bulletin is the successor to the scientific journal Bulletin of the All-Union Institute of Plant Industry, published in Leningrad (Russia) since 1956.
Over its long history (1956–2003), the journal changed its name several times. By the end of 2024, the N.I. Vavilov All-Russian Institute of Plant Genetic Resources (VIR) decided to revive the Bulletin of the All-Union Institute of Plant Industry in its current format, starting with Issue 243: the online scientific journal VIR Bulletin.
The journal’s name in English, Research Bulletin of the N.I. Vavilov Institute of Plant Industry, and the titles of scientific articles in English were absent in a number of issues until 2003. Beginning with Issue 243 (2024), the English name of the journal is VIR Bulletin.
The first editor-in-chief of the Bulletin of the All-Union Institute of Plant Industry was Prof. P.M. Zhukovsky, Dr. Sci. (Biology and Agriculture, Full Member (Academician) of the All-Union Academy of Agricultural Sciences (VASKhNIL); then, the post of the editor-in-chief was held by: Prof. D.D. Brezhnev, Dr. Sci. (Agriculture), Full Member (Academician) of VASKhNIL; Prof. V.F. Dorofeev, Dr. Sci. (Agriculture), Full Member (Academician) of VASKhNIL; Prof. Ya.S. Nesterov, Dr. Sci. (Agriculture), Corresponding Member of the All-Russian Academy of Agricultural Sciences (RAAS); Prof. V. A. Dragavtsev, Dr. Sci. (Biology), Full Member (Academician) of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) and the RAAS.
Our primary task is to continue publishing the journal while preserving its previous issues that have been in demand with the scientific community. Many scientific objectives of VIR (until 2003) are still valid today, and the authors are working at VIR, including its network of branches. The publications of our scientists in this journal are available at the website
https://elibrary.ru/ (https://elibrary.ru/title_about_new.asp?id=53691, https://elibrary.ru/contents.asp?titleid=53691). The issues of 1970–2003 are presented.
